Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, has been identified as the suspect in the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C. The incident occurred when Lakanwal reportedly opened fire with a revolver. During the attack, one unarmed National Guardsman attempted to defend himself with a pocket knife, while another Guardsman returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times.
Both National Guard soldiers were shot in the head during the confrontation. Witnesses reported that Lakanwal shouted “Allahu Akbar!” during the attack. The condition of the injured Guardsmen has not been disclosed.
