ANTIFA has claimed responsibility for cutting down a cross that commemorated Corneliu Zelea Codreanu and 13 legionnaires who were assassinated on the night between November 29th and November 30th, 1938. The group stated that they performed what they described as the Romanian state"s "job" by removing a "fascist memorial," asserting that crosses are considered fascist memorials.
This incident has drawn attention to the ongoing tensions surrounding historical commemorations in Romania. Codreanu was a controversial figure, known for his leadership of the Iron Guard, a far-right movement in Romania during the interwar period.
