Mozambique's President Daniel Chapo announced today that TotalEnergies’ $20 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project is set to resume in September 2025. This significant development positions Mozambique to become the world’s fourth-largest LNG producer, with production expected to begin in 2029-2030.
The project, which aims for a capacity of 30 million tons of LNG per year, will primarily supply markets in Japan and other Asian countries. This strategic move is anticipated to bolster Mozambique's economy and enhance its position in the global energy landscape.
Originally launched in 2019, the LNG project faced delays due to security concerns in the Cabo Delgado province, where insurgent activity has posed challenges to operations. As previously reported, the resumption of this project reflects a renewed commitment to stabilize the region and attract foreign investment.
As the project gears up for resumption, stakeholders are optimistic about the potential economic impact, which could create thousands of jobs and generate substantial revenue for the nation. The focus now shifts to ensuring safety and security in the region, crucial for the successful implementation of this ambitious venture.
