Britain, France, and Germany have officially notified the United Nations Security Council of their intent to trigger snapback sanctions against Iran for violations of the 2015 nuclear deal. This announcement was made today, August 28, 2025.

The three European powers, collectively known as the E3, cited Iran's continued non-compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as the basis for their decision. Specifically, they pointed to Iran's enriched uranium levels exceeding the limits set by the agreement, which were intended to prevent the development of nuclear weapons.

The JCPOA, established in 2015, aimed to curtail Iran's nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions. However, tensions have escalated since the United States withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reinstated sanctions. Iran has progressively abandoned its commitments under the agreement in response to the sanctions regime.

The snapback mechanism allows for the reimposition of sanctions within 30 days if the Security Council does not act to extend or modify existing measures. This move could significantly impact Iran's economy and its ongoing negotiations with other countries regarding its nuclear program.
