Canada has initiated court proceedings to seize a Russian-registered Antonov An-124 "Ruslan" cargo aircraft, which has been grounded at Toronto Pearson International Airport since February 2022 due to sanctions imposed following Russia"s invasion of Ukraine. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced that if the court proceedings are successful, the aircraft, valued at over $100 million and capable of transporting 150 tons, will be transferred to Ukraine to help replenish its fleet, which has been significantly impacted by Russian attacks.
In addition to the aircraft seizure, Canada is also providing financial support to Ukraine"s energy infrastructure. The government has expedited a $10 million (CAD) disbursement aimed at repairing war-damaged energy facilities, particularly in light of increased Russian strikes as winter approaches. This funding is part of a broader $70 million (CAD) commitment to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, which includes an additional $50 million allocated for natural gas compressors to stabilize the energy grid in Kharkiv.
These actions reflect Canada"s ongoing support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict, as previously reported in related coverage.
