Czech President Petr Pavel issued a warning to Russia on Saturday regarding ongoing violations of NATO airspace, labeling the actions as "extremely irresponsible behavior." He stated that these incursions could potentially lead to the downing of Russian aircraft.
During an interview with Czech Television at NATO Days in Ostrava, Pavel emphasized the necessity for a decisive response from the alliance. He remarked, "Violation of airspace is a reason to activate defense mechanisms and thus shoot down such an aircraft." He urged NATO to "react appropriately, including with military means," to deter any further provocations.
Pavel, who previously served as the chair of the NATO Military Committee, referenced the 2015 incident in which Türkiye shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber as a relevant precedent. He called on NATO allies not to "yield to evil" amid rising tensions in the region.
