Denmark has announced its decision to purchase an additional 16 F-35 fighter jets from the United States, bringing its total fleet to 43 F-35s. The acquisition is part of a broader military investment of $4.4 billion aimed at enhancing the country"s defense capabilities, particularly in securing Greenland and the surrounding waters against potential encroachments from Russia and China.
In addition to the fighter jets, Denmark plans to acquire two additional Arctic vessels, several drones, and maritime surveillance aircraft. This military buildup in the Arctic and North Atlantic will be conducted in close cooperation with the Faroe Islands and Greenland. As part of this initiative, a new headquarters for the Arctic Command will be established in Nuuk, which is responsible for overseeing the surveillance of Greenland. Furthermore, an underwater cable will be constructed to connect Greenland and Denmark.
This military enhancement reflects Denmark"s commitment to strengthening its defense posture in the Arctic region amid growing geopolitical tensions.
