Estonia plans to construct a 40-kilometer trench along its border with Russia by 2027. This trench will serve as an additional defense measure, complementing existing natural barriers such as the Narva River and Lake Peipus.
Aivar Afanasyev, a representative of the General Staff, explained that the trench will not be necessary in swampy areas, as enemy equipment would be unable to traverse those regions. The initiative follows Estonia"s earlier installation of gates on the Narva bridge, aimed at enhancing border security.
In a related development, Lithuania has begun building similar fortifications along its border with Belarus, indicating a broader trend in the region towards strengthening border defenses.
