The European Commission launched its LGBT equality strategy for 2026-2030 earlier today. The initiative aims to ensure that LGBT individuals feel included and are not discriminated against in society. Under this strategy, every EU member state is required to submit a national plan to the Commission detailing how they will address discrimination against homosexuals.
In Romania, as well as in other Central and Eastern European countries, this development is expected to increase pressure from Brussels to legalize same-sex marriage. The Commission noted that while social acceptance of homosexuals has reportedly increased in recent years, there has also been a rise in hate crimes against this community, highlighting a contradiction in the current social climate.
The European Commission emphasized that empowering the LGBT community is essential for achieving a "union of equality." This strategy reflects the EU"s ongoing commitment to promoting equality and combating discrimination across member states.
