Hungary has signed a significant 10-year gas supply agreement with Shell, marking a decisive step in the country’s efforts to reduce its reliance on Russian energy. The deal, announced today, is set to commence in 2026, with supplies flowing through Czech and German pipelines.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized that this agreement is part of a broader strategy to diversify energy sources ahead of the European Union’s plan to phase out Russian gas imports by the end of 2027. “We are also negotiating several other contracts with Western suppliers, but are not ready to announce them yet,” he stated.

This move comes amid increasing geopolitical tensions and energy security concerns in Europe, following Russia"s invasion of Ukraine. Hungary, which has historically depended heavily on Russian gas, is now taking proactive measures to ensure a stable energy supply for the future.

The agreement with Shell represents a critical shift for Hungary, as the country seeks to align with EU energy policies while securing its energy needs. As previously reported, other EU nations are also exploring similar diversification strategies to mitigate the impact of reduced Russian energy supplies.
