The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on September 17, 2025, the commencement of their offensive to clear Gaza City. The IDF currently controls approximately 46% of the city, having operated within its limits since March 2025.

Following a significant withdrawal from Gaza City in 2024, the IDF shifted its focus to northern cities, including Jabalia, Beit Lahiya, and Beit Hanoun. Many residents returned to Gaza City after this withdrawal, as the city, while damaged, retained infrastructure to support a large population. However, after the ceasefire was broken in March, the IDF resumed operations in Gaza City, targeting the eastern neighborhoods of Shujaiyya, Kuba, and Al-Tuffah, which are strategically located on higher ground near Israel"s border settlements.

The IDF"s goal has been to create a buffer zone along the border, as these neighborhoods housed elite units of Hamas. Despite facing resistance from militants, the IDF"s operations have been characterized by a cautious approach due to the presence of Palestinian forces. In August, the IDF intensified its attacks in the Al-Zeitoun neighborhood, accelerating demolition operations and further increasing its control over the city.

According to the IDF, over 250,000 civilians have evacuated south, representing approximately 40% of Gaza City"s population at the time. It is believed that some militants also fled to central camps and the city of Deir Al-Balah, areas that have not yet been targeted by the IDF.

This military offensive is part of an ongoing conflict that has seen significant developments in the region. For more information on related coverage, see students interviewed about Israeli-funded "heritage tours".
