New York City"s subway crime rate has reached a historic low, according to Governor Kathy Hochul. During the summer of 2025, the overall crime rate in public transportation dropped by nearly 10%, with serious assaults decreasing by 21% in June, July, and August.

Governor Hochul highlighted that efforts to combat fare evasion have also shown progress, with the rate falling from 14% to 9% since the end of last year. To further enhance safety, she announced the continued deployment of two police officers on each night train, a measure aimed at boosting public confidence in subway travel.

Amid these positive developments, Hochul criticized U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy for threatening to withhold funding from the New York City Transit Authority (MTA). The governor asserted that New York will manage its own safety initiatives without federal intervention.

The significant reduction in crime has been welcomed by commuters and city officials alike, marking a turning point in public transportation safety. As previously reported, similar situations have prompted discussions on the effectiveness of law enforcement strategies in urban transit systems nationwide.
