#BREAKING | Russia has officially withdrawn from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. President Vladimir Putin signed a federal law denouncing the treaty, which Russia had been a member of for 27 years since its inception in 1987.

The withdrawal follows an August decree from Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and received unanimous approval from the State Duma earlier this month. This decision ends the international oversight of Russian detention facilities by the Council of Europe"s Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT).

Russia"s rationale for the withdrawal includes the blocked representation on the monitoring body after its expulsion from the Council of Europe in 2022.

This development marks a significant shift in Russia"s engagement with international human rights frameworks.
