Russian missile upgrades outpace Ukraine's Patriot defenses, officials say

According to a report by the Financial Times, Russian missile upgrades are reportedly outpacing Ukraine"s air defense systems, particularly the US-made Patriot batteries. Ukrainian and western officials have indicated that recent months of Russian air attacks suggest Moscow has successfully modified its missiles to evade these defenses.

Officials noted that bombardments targeting Ukrainian drone manufacturers this summer exemplify Russia"s advancements in ballistic missile technology. Modifications are believed to have been made to the Iskander-M mobile system, which can launch missiles with a range of up to 500 kilometers, as well as the Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missiles, which have a range of approximately 480 kilometers. The modified missiles are said to follow a standard trajectory before executing maneuvers that can confuse and evade Patriot interceptors.

A former Ukrainian official described these developments as a "game-changer for Russia." The situation is compounded by slower deliveries of air defense interceptors from the US, which have allowed Russian missile campaigns to damage key military facilities and critical infrastructure in Ukraine as winter approaches.

Data from the Ukrainian air force, analyzed by the London-based Centre for Information Resilience, indicates that Ukraine"s ballistic missile interception rate improved to 37 percent in August but fell sharply to 6 percent in September, despite a decrease in missile launches. At least four drone manufacturing plants in and around Kyiv sustained significant damage from Russian missile strikes this summer, including an attack on August 28 targeting a facility producing Turkish Bayraktar drones.
