A recent study analyzing 38 million obituaries over three decades reveals that the core values defining life"s meaning are "tradition" and "benevolence." The research highlights that nearly 80% of obituaries emphasized respect for customs and religion, while 76% focused on care, reliability, and trustworthiness.

The findings indicate a gender distinction in how individuals are remembered: women are predominantly honored for their benevolence, while men are often celebrated for their achievements and structured responsibilities. Additionally, elderly individuals are frequently associated with traditions, showcasing a generational perspective on values.

Significant societal crises have influenced the themes present in obituaries. Following the September 11 attacks, mentions of "safety" waned, whereas "tradition" and "benevolence" saw a marked increase, particularly in New York. Conversely, the 2008 financial crisis shifted the focus away from achievements, religion, and traditions, while the COVID-19 pandemic led to a decline in references to benevolence, which have yet to recover.
