In a phone call with European leaders today, former President Donald Trump accused EU countries of indirectly funding the Russian military by continuing to purchase Russian oil. This statement comes amid ongoing tensions regarding the war in Ukraine.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded by highlighting that EU nations have significantly reduced their imports of Russian oil since the conflict began, clarifying that only Hungary and Slovakia are still importing Russian oil. The conversation reportedly grew tense as Trump shifted focus to sanctions against Russia.

During the call, European leaders proposed sending representatives to the U.S. within 48 hours to establish a working group on sanctions. However, it remains uncertain if Trump agreed to this initiative. Historically, Trump has threatened to impose sanctions on Russia but has missed multiple deadlines he set for President Vladimir Putin to cease hostilities in Ukraine.

Additionally, Trump urged EU countries to apply economic pressure on China, citing Beijing"s financial support for Russia"s military efforts. As previously reported, European leaders do not anticipate Trump will take any substantial action against Russia, raising questions about future U.S.-European collaboration on the issue.
