Donald Trump has canceled his planned meeting with Vladimir Putin in Hungary, the White House confirmed on October 21, 2025. The U.S. president will not meet the Russian leader in the “immediate future” following a phone call between negotiators from both countries that did not go as expected.
Initially, Mr. Trump had announced a second summit with Putin in Budapest after a two-hour phone call with the Russian leader, which he described as yielding “great progress.” However, preparations for the summit stalled when Moscow canceled an in-person preparatory meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
On Monday, Mr. Lavrov and Mr. Rubio spoke by phone, but reports indicate that the conversation was unproductive. During the call, Mr. Lavrov reportedly informed Mr. Rubio that Russia would not agree to a freeze of the frontline in Ukraine.
This development comes amid ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Russia, particularly regarding the situation in Ukraine. For more on recent developments in the region, see our previous reports.
