Ukrainian authorities have opened approximately 203,000 cases related to absenteeism and desertion in the military from 2022 to July 2025, according to official data reported by Ukrainska Pravda. The surge in cases reflects the ongoing challenges faced by the country amid its protracted conflict.
In detail, around 7,000 cases of absence without leave (AWOL) were recorded in 2022, escalating to 105,500 in the first half of 2025. Similarly, desertion cases rose from about 3,400 in 2022 to 15,400 in the same period this year, highlighting a significant trend among military personnel.
The data indicates a worrying increase, with AWOL cases jumping from 17,700 in 2023 to 67,800 in 2024. Desertion cases also saw a sharp rise, with 23,300 recorded in 2024. The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) reported that around 21,000 troops returned to service between November 29, 2024, and March 1, 2025, suggesting that efforts are being made to reintegrate personnel.
This rise in military absenteeism reflects the broader impact of ongoing hostilities and the strain on Ukraine's armed forces. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how these trends will affect military operations and overall morale.
