Some American officials have expressed concerns regarding the European Union"s foreign policy approach to Russia, according to a report by the Financial Times. Tensions have surfaced between the Trump administration and its Baltic allies, with complaints about the “Estonianisation” of European foreign policy, a term referencing Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief and former prime minister of Estonia.

Within parts of the Trump administration, Baltic states are perceived as excessively aggressive in their stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin. At a recent high-level Pentagon meeting, Baltic officials were characterized as “ideological” in their opposition to Russia.

There is mutual suspicion between the Baltic states and the United States. In the Estonian foreign ministry, a reproduction of the vote tally from a UN debate on Ukraine, in which the US sided with Russia, was prominently displayed. This was interpreted as a signal that Baltic officials should not assume unwavering support from the Trump administration.

While larger European nations maintain a consistent stance on the necessity of countering Russian aggression, they remain apprehensive about engaging in military action against Russia without US support. This concern is evident in discussions surrounding the potential deployment of a European “reassurance force” to Ukraine without an American “backstop.”
