The United States has redirected the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group to the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility (SOUTHCOM) as part of an effort to enhance its force presence in the region. The USS Gerald R. Ford, described as the "most capable, adaptable, and lethal naval mission package in the world," was previously deployed in Europe.
The aircraft carrier, which carries approximately 4,500 Sailors and is escorted by Destroyer Squadron 2 with Carrier Air Wing 8 embarked, was deployed four months ago. Its new mission will focus on countering narco-terrorism in defense of the homeland and enhancing existing capabilities to disrupt narcotics trafficking and degrade and dismantle transnational criminal organizations (TCOs).
This strategic move aligns with ongoing U.S. efforts to address drug trafficking and related security challenges in the region. For further context on related developments, see recent developments in border security.
