The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition leader. The announcement was made today in Oslo, recognizing her "unwavering commitment to democracy, human rights, and nonviolent resistance against authoritarianism."

Machado, 56, has been a key figure in Venezuela"s democratic movement, facing significant repression, including disqualification from the 2024 presidential candidacy and threats of exile. The Nobel Committee highlighted her efforts in mobilizing global support for free elections and exposing electoral fraud, aligning with Alfred Nobel"s vision of peace through justice.

The Nobel Peace Prize includes a monetary award of 11 million Swedish kronor, approximately $1 million USD, which will be presented to Machado on December 10. With this recognition, she becomes the first Venezuelan laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize.
