Wagner Group has entered the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)-controlled Darfur region of Sudan, taking control of at least five towns and advancing up to 35-40 kilometers into Sudan. This development occurred a few days ago, as RSF has withdrawn from over 50 kilometers of the Sudan-Central African Republic (CAR) border in the direction of South Darfur.

The reasons behind Wagner"s operation in the region remain unclear. The group had previously withdrawn its open support of RSF in 2021, allowing Moscow to establish ties with the Iran-backed Sudanese government. The area of Wagner"s activity is significant for RSF, as it is a critical route for military aid flowing from the United Arab Emirates via cargo planes landing at Birao Air Port in CAR. This aid is transported into Sudan using route RN8, which is vital for the ongoing Battle of al-Fashir, supplying two key RSF airbases located at Durri and Zalingei.
