The Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Ireland and Iceland has successfully purchased Christ Church in Leeson Park, Dublin, preventing its conversion into a mosque. The acquisition was finalized this week, marking a significant milestone for the local Romanian Orthodox community.

Funding for the purchase, which totaled approximately 10 million lei ($2.3 million), came from a non-reimbursable grant provided by Romania’s Department for Romanians Abroad, alongside contributions from hundreds of faithful believers. The community had also organized a GoFundMe campaign to bolster their fundraising efforts.

Christ Church, a former Anglican church built in the 19th century, had been at risk of being transformed into a mosque, sparking concerns among local residents and churchgoers. The Romanian Orthodox community, which has been growing in Dublin, saw the opportunity to preserve the building for their worship and cultural activities.

This acquisition not only secures a place for the Romanian Orthodox community but also reflects ongoing efforts to maintain the church"s historical significance in Dublin. As the community plans to renovate and repurpose the space, it aims to foster a vibrant environment for worship and outreach, further solidifying its presence in the region.
