Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has accused the European Union (EU) and NATO of planning a military intervention in Moldova, which it claims could result in a "de facto occupation" following the country"s parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28, 2025.
The SVR alleges that NATO forces are gathering in Romania near the Moldovan border and are preparing for an amphibious deployment in Ukraine"s Odesa region. This action is purportedly intended to exert pressure on the breakaway region of Transnistria. The agency claims that Brussels is seeking to implement "Russophobic policies" in Chisinau and may use disputes arising from the elections as a justification for intervention.
This accusation comes amid heightened tensions in the region, as Moldova navigates its political landscape and relations with both Western and Eastern powers. The situation remains fluid as the elections approach.
