Sudan has proposed a 25-year naval base agreement to Russia, marking the establishment of Russia"s first naval base in Africa. This base would provide Russia with a strategic position overlooking the Red Sea channel and significantly enhance the operational range of its naval fleet.
The proposed port facility would accommodate up to 300 troops and allow for the docking of up to four warships, including nuclear-powered vessels. In return for granting access to the naval base, the Sudanese military is expected to receive advanced Russian anti-aircraft systems and other weaponry at preferential prices.
This development comes amid ongoing geopolitical shifts in the region, with Sudan seeking to bolster its military capabilities through international partnerships. For further context on military developments in the region, see recent developments regarding the Sudanese Armed Forces.
